Class of 2021: take every opportunity to learn new skills both at work and at university

Name: Matt McDonnell
Degree apprenticeship title: BSc Digital & Technology Solutions
Employer: Ford Motor Company
Higher Education Institution: University of Greenwich

How did you find out about Tech Industry Gold accredited degree apprenticeships?

I found the apprenticeship online while looking for alternative paths to full-time university study.

What was the best moment of your degree apprenticeship experience?

Receiving my final-year results letter was a good feeling – that’s when the fact that I had finished the apprenticeship really sunk in.

What was the most challenging experience?

The first few weeks of remote delivery in March 2020 were challenging as there was a need to adapt quickly. The end result, though, was excellent – once the university hit its stride with remote lectures, I felt these were actually more effective than our on-site sessions.

What would you say now to yourself before you enrolled on your degree apprenticeship?

Keep an open mind, take every opportunity to learn new skills both at work and at university, and the results at the end of the four years will be more than worthwhile.

What would you say to anyone considering a Tech Industry Gold degree apprenticeship?

Degree apprenticeships are still a fairly new concept, but don’t let this stop you from applying. The programmes are well-structured, and apprentices are fully supported.

Who inspires you?

I don’t know of anyone who inspires me personally, but I think when you are surrounded by colleagues in the workplace who are five, ten years further along in their careers than you are, it is great to be able to see what they do and visualise what that progression might look like for yourself in years to come.
