Liam Jack, ITMB graduate

by Liam Jack, ITMB Student

As a child, I always found myself fascinated with the latest advancements in technology, whether it be reading about it or getting hands on experience. I followed my passion by taking IT at both GCSE and A-Level, and found it to be a subject I thoroughly enjoyed. When the time came to looking for university degrees I was unsure what to choose, but then I was introduced to ITMB.

What I love most about ITMB is its ability to bring together the worlds of business and technology and shows how both subjects interact. This is the main reason I chose to study the degree and ever since I attended my first open day I have expected the course to offer just that. Studying ITMB at Northumbria has more than delivered.

In my first year I studied modules that delved deep into a range of topics that I was interested in. We covered everything from business information systems right through to the more technical areas such as Oracle and SQL. However technical the course became, it always linked back to how the systems could be implemented in business.

Now in second year, I am beginning to apply for industrial placements, which I will hopefully undertake in my third year. Although there are many opportunities out there, the competition is tough. I’m making sure I don’t look too far ahead into the future, and making sure I focus on the next step of my tech story.

Since beginning to study the degree (and partly down to my entrepreneurial tendencies), I’ve co-founded a limited company and we have developed an app. The app, named ‘Newcastle Nights’, is primarily aimed at students, acting as an information source for the Newcastle nightlife, with everything from events, to taxis, to takeaways.

Although not part of my degree, I can’t help but notice that ITMB has played its part in the process. I met the other co-founder of the company on my first day at Northumbria and the knowledge we have gained over the first year of our course has been beneficial in our business.

Through ITMB I have also been fortunate enough to put learnt knowledge into practice working for IBM at The Wimbledon Tennis Championships. Towards the end of my first year I was able to apply for the summer placement and went through a rigorous interview process before finally being offered a role. Myself and 3 other ITMB students were lucky enough to spend a month onsite at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. We assisted in the deployment of all of IBMs technical systems and maintained a supporting role throughout the course of the tournament. The placement was hard work, but at the same time massively rewarding, especially when you see the systems you deployed being put to use.

Being part of the team providing systems for a high profile, global event, was something I never dreamed I would be doing at the start of the course. But that is what ITMB is all about. A degree that offers both a superb course and a fantastic employer involvement, giving students a head start, an unfair advantage, and opportunities like no other.
