Why I chose ITMB and a career in technology

Most of my family members have chosen to go down the science path. When I was at school, I loved biology and ICT. At that time I had to make a decision about if I wanted to study IT or biology in college . I naturally decided to follow the science path, taking after my family. I decided to take Biology, Psychology and Health and Social Care as my A-levels. In the first year of college, I volunteered at a hospital for six months. Even though I enjoyed the time I spent there, I knew that working in a hospital is not a job for me.

In second year of college, I decided to drop Health and Social Care and picked up ICT. This was a turning point for me. I never looked back. I have always been enthusiastic about the ICT lectures and really enjoyed them.  In my third year of college, I also picked up Business Studies and Accounting.

When I started researching for degrees that I could study in university, I was looking for a combination of IT and Business. This is when I found out about Information Technology Management for Business (ITMB).

I studied ITMB for 4 years at University of the West of England, Bristol, during which I did a one year industrial placement at IBM. ITMB is a fantastic degree where the students get regular ‘guru’ lectures delivered by the industry experts. Students are also given the opportunity to take part in networking events, where they can meet with some of the top IT employers and take part in competitions. I took part in three competitions during the time I was studying ITMB and won the team competition twice. This gave me a huge confidence boost and encouraged me to do even better.

During my placement year, I did two roles, IT Events Management and Infrastructure Specialist. The Events Manager role was related to business stream and the Infrastructure Specialist role was very technical. I enjoyed both of the roles very much. I found the technical role more challenging, however I learnt a lot from that role. My interest and love for IT became even stronger as I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year and decided that I definitely want to work for an IT company after graduating.

Since graduating in July 2014, I have been working with one of the largest IT companies in the world, HP. Here, I have been working as an Implementation Project Manager, where I have had the opportunity to work with some of the biggest customers and helping them by project managing their hardware and software implementations.

Looking back at my tech story, I would say that it is okay to not know exactly what you want to do, especially if you still at school. Working in the IT industry brings so many different opportunities and they all do not require an IT degree. There are lots of websites that provides insights into different roles available within the IT industry and the ways in which to get there. Research well, keep a positive attitude and I am sure you will find a role that you will really enjoy.
