Where Are They Now? Natasha Barker – From Student to Tech Leader

Meet Natasha Barker, a Tech Industry Gold alumni whose journey from university to becoming a recognised tech leader is nothing short of inspiring. Now a Senior Domain Architect and based in Wigan, Greater Manchester, Natasha reflects on her path from studying IT Management for Business at Keele University to shaping IT strategy at Matalan.
A Degree That Blends Tech and Business
Natasha chose Keele’s Tech Industry Gold accredited programme for its unique combination of technical and business skills, and its strong employer involvement. “The blend of tech and business really appealed to me,” she says. “I knew it would open up multiple career options in IT.”
The programme’s employer-led events and lectures were a highlight. “They gave great insight into all the career possibilities,” Natasha explains. “Networking with students and employers, attending CV and interview workshops, and hearing from alumni was incredibly energising.”Challenges and Growth
While programming modules proved challenging, Natasha valued the exposure. “It wasn’t something I saw myself doing long-term, but understanding the fundamentals was still important.”
What stood out most was the employer engagement. “Meeting senior professionals from different industries and hearing their career journeys helped shape my own,” she says. “The CV and interview workshop at IBM was especially impactful, it helped me refine my CV and better present myself.”From Graduate to Senior Domain Architect
Natasha’s first tech role came quickly after graduation, joining Matalan’s IT team as a Junior Infrastructure Architect. Today, she’s a Senior Domain Architect, mentoring others and leading large-scale projects. “I help shape IT strategy and drive innovation,” she shares.
Her success is rooted in the soft skills she developed during her degree. “Networking, presenting, project management—these skills helped me add value from day one. I didn’t need to learn them from scratch, which is rare for a graduate.”Recognition and Future Aspirations
Natasha’s achievements have been widely recognised. In 2024, she was named on Drapers’ prestigious 30 Under 30 list and featured in their magazine. She also made DTX’s Top 50 Tech Leaders list.
Looking ahead, Natasha is ambitious: “I love IT architecture, but I aspire to progress to a Head Of position and beyond.”
