Chartered Management Institute's Chartered Manager (CMgr) standard
A career as a Business Analyst, Transformation Lead or Digital Consultant is no longer simply about mastering a job title or a set of technical tools. The strongest professionals combine technology capability with leadership, decision-making, change management and the ability to deliver measurable organisational impact. That's why TechSkills has worked with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) to bring technology-industry expertise into modern management and leadership development.
CMI is the UK's only Chartered Body for management and leadership, operating under Royal Charter, and its Professional Standard provides a recognised framework for the capabilities, knowledge and behaviours expected of effective managers and leaders, covering personal effectiveness, interpersonal excellence, organisational performance, and ethical and inclusive leadership. Most significantly for technology professionals, CMI's Leading AI Transformation qualification suite was developed in collaboration with TechSkills, the accreditation body for Tech Industry Gold, combining CMI's recognised management and leadership framework with practical capabilities for leading AI adoption, managing change, improving workflows, applying responsible AI and measuring business impact.
New entry-level requirement · via the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship
Foundation Chartered Manager (fCMgr)
CMI can award Foundation Chartered Manager (fCMgr) status on completion of a recognised management apprenticeship, depending on experience. It's a real, earlier-stage entry point on the same pathway that leads to full Chartered Manager (CMgr) status later in a career.
MCMI
Member
Full CMI membership for practising managers with genuine management responsibility.
fCMgr
Foundation Chartered Manager
An apprenticeship-linked entry point on the pathway to full chartered status.
CMgr
Chartered Manager
The highest management status CMI awards: professional recognition of the ability to deliver impact, act ethically, and keep developing.
FCMI
Fellow
CMI's most senior membership grade, for significant contribution to the profession as a practitioner, teacher or researcher.
Three areas of competence and commitment
Organisational performance
Strategic and operational delivery: setting direction, managing risk, and understanding the financial and digital context a decision sits in.
Interpersonal excellence
Leading people and building collaborative relationships across a whole organisation, not just a single team.
Personal effectiveness
Self-awareness, ethical practice, and a genuine commitment to continual development as a manager.
Staying registered
Chartered Manager status is maintained through ongoing CPD recorded with CMI, not awarded once and left alone. It's the same logic as every other chartership on this site: professional recognition has to be kept current, not just earned.
Already a real requirement
This isn't abstract: CMI's own Level 6 Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship standard (ST0272) explicitly includes digital business and new technologies as a formal knowledge requirement, covering their impact on organisations, data and knowledge management, innovation and business decision-making, for every apprentice working toward chartered status, not just those in technical roles.
What does "good" look like in Strategy & Transformation?
TechSkills enrichment across Strategy & Transformation programmes is built to develop these eight things, not just technical skill on its own.
1
Strategic and operational competence
Real business strategy, business analysis or consulting insight from a working professional.
2
Professional ethics
What CMI's own standard for behaving ethically actually asks of a manager, beyond just hitting targets.
3
Communication
Presenting to stakeholders, influencing decisions and negotiating: a formal part of CMI's own competence framework.
4
Collaboration
Cross-functional working and stakeholder management on a real transformation programme.
5
Leadership
Inclusive leadership, coaching and team development, not just direction-setting from the top.
6
Continuing professional development
Why chartered status is never "one and done": CMI requires it to stay current, and so should a learner's own habits.
7
Real-world application
Real employer transformation and consulting case studies, not textbook frameworks.
8
Career progression and professional registration
How to move from Member through to Chartered Manager, and why digital literacy is now a formal requirement of that standard, not an extra.
Build these exact competencies in the Skills Lab
The Professional Practice zone and Employer's Essentials develop this same behavioural and ethical foundation.
Every claim about the CMI standard itself was checked directly against CMI's and the government's own live pages on 2026-08-20, including the published Level 6 Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship standard. One caveat: this specific apprenticeship standard version is under revision, and from 1 September 2026 it will not be available for new government-funded starts (existing apprentices continue to completion; it remains available for privately funded delivery). This detail is worth reconfirming directly with CMI before relying on it for a specific application. The Leading AI Transformation qualification suite and its development in collaboration with TechSkills, the accreditation body for Tech Industry Gold, is first-party information supplied directly by TechSkills (2026-08-24), not independently verified against a public CMI page — add a source link here once one is published.
