Software Engineering
Train as a professional software engineer and step straight into live client projects with the technical skills to deliver from day one
Your journey starts here
Journey overview
This structured pathway combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience, preparing you for real-world impact in your field.
What you'll get
Accredited Level 6 qualification aligned to industry standards
Who it's for
This programme is designed for graduates and career changers who are serious about building a foundation in professional software development. You may have a degree in a computing or STEM subject, or you may have developed coding skills independently — what matters is aptitude and motivation to work at pace in a client-facing environment. It suits people who want to move quickly from training into real commercial work rather than spending years in theory before touching production systems.
Career progression
From here, the natural trajectory runs through mid-level and senior engineering roles, with many graduates progressing to Lead Developer or Solutions Architect positions within five to seven years. The consultancy context also opens a parallel path into technical programme management or engineering leadership, and the L6 credential provides a strong basis for further study at postgraduate level should you choose it.
About this programme
The Software Engineering programme is structured around a shared core followed by two specialist streams in Software Development and Software Testing. All learners complete an initial six-week core phase comprising three two-week sprints, which establish foundational capabilities in areas such as agile delivery, software engineering practices, and collaborative working within cross-functional teams. This core ensures that all participants develop a common understanding of the software development lifecycle, delivery frameworks, and business context before specialising.
Following this core phase, learners progress into one of two streams—Software Development or Software Testing—based on their role alignment and career pathway. During this specialist phase, learners continue to work collaboratively on shared project-based activities, assuming different but complementary roles within the same delivery teams, thereby reflecting real-world software engineering environments.
In the Software Development stream, learners focus on the design, development and support of software applications across a range of technologies and platforms. They build practical skills in implementing functionality across the full stack, working within agile teams on both greenfield and existing systems. Emphasis is placed on integrating effectively into client environments, understanding business and technical drivers, and prioritising delivery of high-value features in collaboration with stakeholders.
In the Software Testing stream, learners specialise in software quality engineering, developing the knowledge and skills required to perform a range of junior testing roles, including test analyst, test automation engineer and quality engineer. They gain experience across multiple testing phases, including system integration, user acceptance and end-to-end testing, and develop practical capability in designing, executing and automating tests, as well as defect management and reporting.
This structure ensures that all learners benefit from a shared foundation while developing specialist expertise, and that both streams maintain strong alignment through continued collaboration in project-based work, mirroring the roles and interactions found in modern software delivery teams.
