Product & Design
Human-Centric Experiences
Design is not just how it looks, but how it works. This matrix explores the roles that bridge the gap between user needs and technical implementation.

Chartered Society of Designers's Chartered Designer status (CPSK™ framework)
UX and product design already has its own genuine chartered pathway in the UK: the Chartered Society of Designers, which has held a Royal Charter since 1976 and now runs a dedicated "MCSD UX/UI Chartered Designer" route alongside its more traditional design disciplines (interior, industrial product, engineering). That matters for how a Design & UX programme should be framed. This isn't just a craft skill you pick up, it's a recognised profession with its own register, code of conduct and continuing development requirement, the same shape of professional structure as law, engineering or accountancy, just less widely known yet in tech circles.
The Society describes itself as the internationally recognised body for the design profession, and is listed by the UK government as a PSRB (Professional, Statutory, Regulatory Body). Its standards for professional design practice are adopted by design courses, design businesses and design practitioners across every design discipline.
New entry-level requirement · ongoing route
Associate Member (Associate CSD)
CSD offers a membership category to suit every stage of a designer's career. Associate Member is the entry point for those at the early stages, building toward full Member (MCSD) and, eventually, Chartered Designer status in their specific discipline.
Associate CSD
Associate Member
For designers at the early stages of their career.
MCSD
Member
Full membership, awarded once a designer demonstrates established professional competence.
Chartered Designer
Chartered Designer (in a named discipline, e.g. UX/UI)
The chartered pinnacle: the highest level of competence in professional design practice, recognised on the international Register of Chartered Designers.
Fellow CSD
Fellow
The Society's most senior grade, for significant achievement in design practice or contribution to the profession.
Four areas of competence and commitment
Creativity
Original, purposeful design thinking applied to a real brief, not decoration for its own sake.
Professionalism
Conducting design practice to a recognised ethical and professional standard, bound by CSD's Code of Conduct.
Skills
The practical, technical craft of the specific design discipline: for UX/UI, the hands-on tools and methods of the trade.
Knowledge
The underpinning theory and context a designer needs to explain and justify their decisions, not just execute them.
Staying registered
Chartered Designer status isn't a one-off award: CSD requires an Annual Compliance Statement, tracked through its own CPD Toolkit and benchmarked against the same CPSK framework used for chartership itself, to keep the title current. Members also commit to CSD's formal Code of Conduct, enforceable by the Society's Conduct Sub-Committee, including reprimand, suspension or expulsion for a serious breach.
Already a real requirement
This is a real, live professional route today, not a proposal: CSD's "MCSD UX/UI Chartered Designer" pathway sits alongside its Industrial Product and Engineering chartership routes, meaning a UX/product designer can already become chartered in that specific discipline, on the same Register of Chartered Designers as every other design specialism the Society covers.
What does "good" look like in Product & Design?
TechSkills enrichment across Product & Design programmes is built to develop these eight things, not just technical skill on its own.
1
Craft and technical skill
Real UX/UI or product design practice from a working designer: the tools, methods and decisions behind a genuine product.
2
Professional ethics
What CSD's Code of Conduct actually asks of a designer, and why professional integrity is judged alongside creative and technical skill.
3
Communication
How designers present and defend their decisions to clients, stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
4
Collaboration
What it's really like working alongside engineers, product managers and researchers to ship a real product.
5
Creativity in practice
How "good" creative thinking is actually judged in professional practice, not just talent or taste.
6
Continuing professional development
Why design practice doesn't stand still. CSD's own CPD Toolkit and annual compliance process exist for exactly this reason.
7
Real-world application
Real employer design case studies in context, not textbook exercises.
8
Career progression and professional registration
How to move from Associate Member through to Chartered Designer status, including the discipline-specific UX/UI route.
Build these exact competencies in the Skills Lab
The Professional Practice zone and Employer's Essentials develop this same behavioural and ethical foundation.
Every claim above was checked directly against the Chartered Society of Designers' own live pages on 2026-08-20.
