What you'll get
Accredited Level 3 qualification aligned to industry standards
Who it's for
This programme suits anyone at the start of their career who wants to work with data professionally but is not yet ready — or does not need — a degree-level route. It is equally well suited to people moving into a data-focused role from another part of the business, such as administration or operations, where they already handle data informally. No prior technical experience is required, though comfort with numbers and an interest in problem-solving will help you get the most from it.
Career progression
Completing this apprenticeship positions you for roles such as Data Analyst, Business Intelligence Analyst or Reporting Analyst, typically with a salary uplift from the apprenticeship wage to a graduate-equivalent starting point. From there, clear progression routes lead to senior analyst and data engineer positions, or into further study such as a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship or a degree-level programme in data science or business intelligence.
About this programme
Data sits at the heart of how modern organisations make decisions, and someone has to make sure it is collected, stored, cleaned and ready to use. That is exactly what a Data Technician does. This Level 3 apprenticeship gives you hands-on grounding in the full data workflow: sourcing data from internal and external systems, formatting it to consistent standards, combining datasets from multiple sources, and presenting findings in a way that different audiences can actually act on.
You will develop fluency with the tools that data teams rely on every day — spreadsheets, SQL, Power BI and data blending platforms — while also learning the legal and ethical framework that governs responsible data use, including GDPR and data protection legislation. Alongside technical skills, the programme builds the professional habits that employers value: working methodically, documenting your work clearly, and communicating clearly to both technical and non-technical colleagues.
This is the recognised entry route into the UK data profession. It sits below degree-level Data Scientist or Data Engineer roles by design — the goal is mastery of the fundamentals rather than advanced modelling or machine learning. Completing this apprenticeship gives you a credible, employer-validated credential and a strong platform to specialise further.
