Is Critical Thinking the New Coding?
When Kant urged his readers to "dare to know" in 1784, he was challenging people to stop handing their thinking over to others. More than two centuries later, Helen Rantsevitch asks whether that challenge has ever mattered more. In this article, Helen tests a hypothesis: if coding defined the internet age, critical thinking will define the age of AI. To explore it, she brought together more than a dozen CTOs, educators, recruiters and talent leaders from organisations including Deliveroo, Hays, TCS and The Open University. They rarely agree. Some have all but stopped hiring junior developers. Others say nothing fundamental has changed, because they always hired for curiosity and communication rather than technical skill. Yet one theme keeps returning. As AI writes more of the code, human value lies in judgement: framing the right problem, questioning the output and spotting when the machine is confidently wrong. The piece blends philosophy, real hiring practice and a Socratic challenge for the modern CTO. It is a thoughtful read for anyone shaping the next generation of tech talent.
The Learner's Edge in the AI Era
AI tools are now part of everyday working life, and entry-level roles are feeling the pressure. In this article, Blessed Pepple, Founder at Setlwork, argues that technical skill matters more than ever, because it is what helps you spot when AI output looks right but isn't. He then sets out five human capabilities, drawn from established research, that help learners act on that judgement: reflective practice, emotional intelligence, resilience, self-efficacy and adaptive communication. Each comes with a practical tip to try.
Never Stop Wondering: Why Curiosity Is the Missing Skill in AI Upskilling
Asking questions is how we learn, yet many of us stop doing it far too early. For Daniel, founder of Galagog and former Amazon employee, that moment came in a Year 8 chemistry lesson, and it has shaped his thinking ever since. Having supported thousands of people to use technology, data and AI more confidently in their work, he sees the same hesitation everywhere: capable people holding back, waiting for permission, convinced they are "not technical". In this thoughtful piece, Daniel makes the case for curiosity as an essential skill in an AI-driven world, and explains why educators and employers have a shared role in giving people the confidence to experiment, question and grow.
Why Stories Matter in Opening Up Technology Careers
QA's Chief Learning Officer Jo Bishenden argues that widening access to tech careers takes more than creating opportunities - it takes visibility and confidence-building too, illustrated by the story of a learner who initially thought tech was "too advanced" for her before finding her footing through an AI workshop.

People Are the Superpower. Not AI.
Brave & Heart's David Parkinson argues that as AI tools become commoditised and nearly identical across vendors, the real competitive advantage shifts to the people who know when to challenge, iterate on, or ignore what the AI produces.
AI Career Anxiety Is Rising Faster Than Job Losses
Prospects at Jisc's Chris Rea highlights a widening gap between how anxious young people feel about AI and jobs, and what employers are actually planning - and argues that access to AI training, not the technology itself, is what's really driving the divide in confidence.

Event Round-Up: Future Careers in Emerging Tech
A round-up of techUK's Future Careers in Emerging Tech event, where panellists made the case that routes into AI, quantum, cybersecurity and semiconductors run through far more than traditional STEM degrees - and that soft skills matter just as much as technical ones.

The Key to the UK's AI Success Lies in Investment in Training and Upskilling
Databricks' Michael Green argues that the UK's AI ambitions will stall without a parallel investment in skills, not just infrastructure. He points to a stark gap between global tech leaders' training spend and UK businesses actually cutting training budgets, despite billions in government AI funding.
