This programme is designed for anyone looking to build a serious career in IT infrastructure, whether you are starting out after school or college, moving into tech from a different field, or already working in a junior IT role and wanting formal accreditation. No prior degree is required — employers value drive, curiosity, and a practical mindset above academic history. If you enjoy problem-solving, working with technology, and helping people stay productive, this apprenticeship is built for you.
Career progression
Completing this apprenticeship puts you on the path to specialist and senior roles such as Network Engineer, Systems Administrator, IT Infrastructure Analyst, or Cybersecurity Technician. Many graduates choose to progress to Level 4 or Level 5 apprenticeships in areas such as Network Engineering, Cyber Security, or Cloud Infrastructure, and the RITTech professional registration gained on completion provides a recognised marker of competence for employers across the UK.
About this programme
The Information Communications Technician apprenticeship gives you the practical and technical grounding to support, build, and maintain the digital infrastructure that organisations depend on every day. Working across hardware, software, networks, and cloud services, you will develop the ability to diagnose faults, apply security controls, manage workloads, and communicate clearly with stakeholders at every level.
Three specialist pathways let you direct your training where your interests and employer needs align. The Support Technician pathway focuses on resolving user issues, managing service desk tickets, administering access permissions, and maintaining endpoint devices. The Network Technician pathway takes you into routing, switching, cloud platforms, DNS, firewalls, and network performance monitoring. The Digital Communications Technician pathway combines telecommunications hardware, cabling, and network communication architecture with hands-on diagnostic and commissioning work.
Delivered over 18 months in a real working environment, this Level 3 apprenticeship suits everyone from school leavers entering tech for the first time to career changers who want structured, employer-backed training. You finish ready for end-point assessment and eligible for RITTech professional registration.
